Scorched earth

Military strategy term means to burn and lay waste everything that could be of use to an enemy. The practice is of course extremely ancient and goes back beyond Greek and Roman times but the English expression is from c. 1937 when it was first used to describe what the Chinese were doing in the face of Japanese invasion.
