Scum/scum of the earth

A very old word from the 13th century meaning a thin layer of foam or froth that forms on top of a liquid. From there it evolved into a thin layer of dirt and then to dirt itself. By the 16th century, it was being used figuratively to describe the lowest class of humanity and by the early 18th century, the expression scum of the earth made its first appearance.
