Keep one’s eyes peeled or skinned

Both forms of the expression are US frontier slang from the early to mid-19th century, for keeping one’s eyes wide open and staying on full alert. The US frontier in those days was a dangerous place and keeping one’s eyes peeled was very often the difference between life and death.
