Thorn in the flesh/side

Origin of: Thorn in the flesh/side

Thorn in the flesh/side

This figurative expression for a particularly troublesome obstacle or problem is attributed to St Paul, Corinthians II, 12:7, “there was given to me a thorn in the flesh” but there is an older version of it in the Old Testament, in Judges 2:3, “They shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.”
