Flesh out

To flesh out something is to add more detail in order to communicate a fuller understanding or picture of something or other, from the allusion of adding flesh to a skeleton or to bare bones. The expression dates from the mid-19th century and is a more modern abbreviation of older expressions like put flesh on the bones of something, which dates from the 1660s.
