Swear blind

Origin of: Swear blind

Swear blind

To swear blind is first cited from the early 20th century and means to swear that something is true, emphatically and vehemently. Blind here is used as an intensifier but some sources suggest this expression could be a shortened construction of ‘swearing God blind me if I am lying’. See also effing and blinding.
