Slip fielders/Slips
Slip fielders are fielding positions in the game of cricket. Slip fielders are usually positioned to the left or right of the wicketkeeper, a fielding position that is known as 'the slips'. Slips are so-called because they rely on balls slipping past the bat and taking the edge, thereby creating a catching opportunity. Slip is an old word for 'edge' dating from the mid-1600s. These meanings were first adapted for cricket from 1833 onwards.
