Pigeon hole

Referring to a small, storage compartment in a desk or cabinet, it dates from the late 18th century from the obvious allusion to the holes made for pigeons in a dovecot. Pigeon hole as in to file something away for future use or reference, either literally or figuratively, dates from the mid-19th century.
