Ace in the hole

Origin of: Ace in the hole

Ace in the hole

This is an American expression dating from the late 19th century, where to have an ace in the hole means that one possesses an advantage that can provide success or certain victory in any endeavour. The origin is from the game of poker where a card dealt face down and kept hidden is called a hole card. Obviously, the best or highest card to have in the hole is an ace.
