On the money

Meaning on target, accurate, on the mark, this expression dates from at least the 16th century and derives from archery where a coin was placed in the centre of a target. An arrow striking the coin or landing near it was said to be ‘on the money’. From the 18th century onwards, it was also used in horseracing to describe a money-winning wager.
