My sainted aunt

A variation of 'my giddy aunt' and also 'my aunt' are mild exclamations of surprise that date from the late 19 century. Why one's aunt has been chosen as an exclamation of surprise is not known. Some say it is a minced oath, genteel form of 'my arse' (British) or 'my ass' (American) but this is not proven.
