Lose one’s marbles

This is an American expression from the late 19th century meaning to lose one’s sanity or wits. It derives from the allusion of a child losing his or her marbles, which of course would be a disaster, inducing frustration and tantrums similar to those displayed by people losing their sanity or wits.
