Ice the cake

Put the icing on the cake is a metaphor for adding a final enhancement or finishing touch to some project or other. The American version is ‘frosting the cake’. The OED cites this figurative usage only from the early 20th century, although people have been putting icing or sugar confections on cakes for centuries.
