Usually in the form of a conversation between two people, an intimate, frank and sincere exchange, dates from the early 19th century, coined by Sir Walter Scott in The Lay of the Last Minstrel (1805) “It is the secret sympathy, the silver link, the silken tie, which heart to heart and mind to mind, in body and soul can bind.”
