Happy as a clam

Origin of: Happy as a clam

Happy as a clam

This is an American expression that dates from the early 19th century. Some have suggested that when a clam has been opened there is a similarity to a broad smile but a more likely explanation of the origin derives from the complete expression, ‘happy as a calm at high water’ or ‘happy as a clam at high tide’, because this is when a clam feels more happy and safe.
