Happy as a pig in shit

Presumably, this rather vulgar expression derives from the observation that pigs are indeed extremely content to wallow in filth of their own making. The expression is originally British from around 1870 and is a vulgar version of ‘happy as a pig in muck/mud’, which is rarely heard these days.
