Cool one’s heels

To cool one’s heels is to be kept waiting, usually beyond the bounds of accepted courtesy. The original literal meaning was to cool or rest one’s feet after walking for a long time, which by the early 1600s evolved into being forced to do so by being kept waiting. See also Kick one’s heels.
