Clean pair of heels

To show a clean pair of heels is to set off quickly and leave one’s pursuers with nothing but a view of one’s heels. The expression dates from the 16th century and some say it originates from cockfighting when birds wore sharp spurs. If a cockerel sped off refusing to fight, both its spurs and heels would be clean.
