By no/not by any stretch of the imagination

Both these versions of the same expression emphasize that something is definitely not the case or that something is impossible to believe, even after a great deal of effort. The expression dates from the late 1700s. Sometimes the phrase ‘of the imagination’ is omitted, especially in America, so the expression becomes ‘by no stretch’.
