By no stretch of the imagination

Origin of: By no stretch of the imagination

By no stretch of the imagination

This expression is used to emphasize that something is definitely not the case or that something is impossible to believe, even after a great deal of effort. The expression dates from the late 1700s. Sometimes the phrase ‘of the imagination’ is omitted, especially in America, so the expression becomes ‘by no stretch’.
