By no stretch of the imagination
<p>This expression is used to emphasize that something is definitely not the case or that something is impossible to believe, even after a great deal of effort. The expression dates from the late 1700s. Sometimes the phrase ‘of the imagination’ is omitted, especially in America, so the expression becomes ‘by no stretch’.</p>
