Blood and guts

Marked by great zeal, determination and violence, as in blood-and-guts movies/novels, blood-and-guts football etc dates from the 1930s. Blood and guts was also the nickname of American General Patton, after his famous blood-and-guts speech to his troops on the eve of the Normandy landings, 5 June 1944.
