Big guns

Its figurative meaning for pre-eminent, important persons or heavyweights dates from the mid-19th century. Charles Dickens used the metaphor in a letter in 1867 when he wrote, “The College mustered in full force, from the biggest guns to the smallest.” See also Going great guns.
