Ants in the pants

Origin of: Ants in the pants

Ants in the pants

All the evidence points to a rhyming jingle of American origin dating from the 1930s and describes restless, jittery behaviour i.e. how one would behave literally if ants were to invade one’s pants. From this expression, the shorter, more modern version antsy is derived, c.1950, meaning nervous or jittery.
