Fly by the seat of the pants

Improvise, adjust and correct as one goes along, an Americanism that has its origins from the early days of flying when there was little or no instrumentation in flying machines. Its current figurative meaning dates from about 1930, sometimes used without any allusion to flying e.g. by the seat of one’s pants.
