Across the board

Applying to all or everything in general and in this sense dates from the early 20th century. Earlier, during the 19th century, it was a term for spread betting in American horseracing where a bet is placed on a horse across the board i.e. win or place (first, second or third). In Britain, this same bet is known as each way.
