Yoghurt/yogurt

Origin of: Yoghurt/yogurt

Yoghurt/yogurt

Although this familiar dairy product dates back to 6000 BC and Genghis Khan’s Mongol armies lived on it during their conquests in the 12th century, the word itself is a straight borrowing from the Turkish word yogurt and is first cited in English from 1625, according to the OED. Yogurt is the preferred spelling in North America but worldwide yoghurt is the more popular spelling by far.
