X marks the spot

This expression defines the location of something, usually on a map or diagram. It was used by Robert Louis Stevenson in Treasure Island (1883) where X marked the location on a map, where buried treasure lay. It was also used in the early days of press photography to mark the exact spot where a crime was committed.
