Wotcha/wotcher

The British slang phrase ‘wotcha cock’ is actually short for the very dated ‘wotcha cock sparrow/sparrer’. Wotcha is in fact a contraction of the medieval greeting what cheer. By the 19th century, what cheer had become wotcha, particularly amongst the lower working classes in Britain.
