World’s oldest profession
It is generally acknowledged that prostitution is the world’s oldest profession but no one knows who established this as fact, if indeed it is a fact. According to the Bible, Adam was a gardener, thus making gardening the world’s oldest pastime, if not exactly a profession. Prostitution, however, in the sense of trading sex for money or other benefits, must have been around since the dawn of time. It was a recognised profession in many ancient civilisations, including Egypt. As a basic form of bartering, prostitution is hard to beat and probably pre-dates the invention of money, giving credence to its claim as the world’s oldest profession. See also Adam the gardener.
