Woke / Stay woke

'Woke', the past tense of 'wake', and the slogan 'stay woke' are originally African American expressions that signify an awareness of racial prejudice and racial discrimination. They date back to the 1930s, but in the 21st century the expressions have come to include an awareness of other issues of social inequality, for example, gender and sexual orientation. These days the expressions are used as a general term for left-wing political movements, and the politics of people of colour, LGBT people, and women. Since 2014, the slogan 'stay woke' has also been adopted by the 'Black Lives Matter' movement, which started in 2013.
