Wing it

To wing it means to play something by ear (in its figurative sense) or make it up as one goes along. The expression derives from the world of theatre during the late 19th century when actors might be learning their lines in the wings at the last minute, or were on stage and being heavily prompted from the wings. Such actors were to be ‘winging it’.
