Up the spout

A spout is a drain, also a pawnbroker’s lift or hoist by which pawned goods were taken into storage. Up the spout, means variously ruined, pawned, beyond recall, down the drain, or pregnant, and dates from the early 19th century, sharing many similarities with up the pole in that people said to be up the spout are all in some kind of trouble or other.
