Up the pole

This a curious idiom because it has so many different meanings varying from in the wrong, intoxicated, crazy, or even pregnant. They all date from the late 19th/early 20th century and the only thing they have in common is that the person or persons said to be up the pole are always in some form of difficulty or other.
