Up in the gods

The highest seats in a theatre have been known as the gods or gallery gods since the latter half of the 18th century. The OED maintains that the origin of the expression is simply the height of the seats as a hyperbole for up in the heavens or near to the gods. Other sources maintain that the source is the Drury Lane Theatre in London that had frescoes of mythical gods painted on the ceiling.
