Under the thumb

To be under the thumb is a very old expression meaning to be under someone’s command or control and dates in this sense from the late 1500s. The expression derives from the obvious allusion of downward pressure of the thumb to restrict the free movement of anything under it. Attempts to link the meaning to ancient gladiatorial contests, where a thumb signal could mean life or death, are spurious.
