Tyke

Origin of: Tyke

Tyke

Generally accepted name since about c. 1700 for someone from Yorkshire, derives from Scottish and Northern dialect in the 14th/15th centuries for a dog, but usually in deprecation, i.e. a low-bred mongrel or cur. The term was applied to Yorkshire people from the late 17th/early 18th century onwards, for their perceived love and ownership of such dogs. The etymology is from Old Norse tik meaning a bitch.
