Two bites at the apple/cherry

To take two bites or a second bite at the apple or cherry (these two fruits appear to be interchangeable) means to get a second chance or opportunity of achieving something or other. It is believed that the use of cherry in the expression precedes that of apple, but they both date from the mid to late 19th century.
