This expression means to be extremely cautious in one’s actions or words, especially to avoid offending others. It started out as ‘walking on eggs’ and dates in this format from the late 16th century. The eggshells version then appeared during the early 18th century. Both versions are used interchangeably with eggshells appearing to be the more popular.
