Tough day at the office

Origin of: Tough day at the office

Tough day at the office

This expression was probably once a literal reference to a troublesome, stressful day at one’s office of work but it was soon adopted as a figurative expression for a poor or difficult performance, especially in a sporting context, where it has become something of a cliché. Also appears as a bad or hard day at the office and dates in this figurative sense from the late 20th century.
