Origin of: Toby Jug

Toby Jug

A Toby Jug is a porcelain beer mug or jug that has a face on it usually wearing a three-cornered hat. These mugs were popular drinking vessels from the early 19th century and are thought to have been prompted by an 18th century poem about a soldier called Tobias (Toby) Philpot who liked to drink, hence the pun on his name ‘fill pot’. Today, many public houses in Britain go by the name of The Toby Jug.
