To-die-for

This popular American hyperbole dates from the late 20th century and means that something is so amazing that it is worth dying for. For example, this chocolate cake is to-die-for. It is thought to be of American Jewish origin and is perhaps a development from the adjectival phrase drop-dead, describing something superlative or excellent.
