Tittle-tattle

This expression meaning idle talk or chatter, snitching or telling tales dates from the early 16th century. Shakespeare uses the word tattle in Titus Andronicus Act IV, Scene II. “Then let the ladies tattle what they please.” The OED informs us that this and other similar expressions such as twaddle are all onomatopoeic or echoic in origin.
