Tirade

A tirade is a protracted verbal rant or rave; a long and vehement speech laced with invective. The OED gives a first citation as 1801. It derives from the French tirer meaning to shoot or open fire. A tirade in French means a volley of shots. In English, it has come to mean a volley of words.
