Thumping

This word is usually used as an intensifying adjective to describe someone or something as much bigger than normal, as in a thumping great chest of drawers or a thumping great, huge fellow. It first appears in this sense during the late 1500s. It can also mean a thrashing, which dates from around the same time. See also Whacking, whopping,
