Thumbs up/thumbs down

These expressions and/or gestures generally express approval or disapproval in English-speaking contexts and date from the 19th century. The English-speaking context is very important because in some European, Middle Eastern and Asian cultures these hand gestures have different meanings, some of which are grossly insulting.
