Through thick and thin

To go through thick and thin means to progress through all eventualities, from the good (thick) to the lean (thin) and dates from at least the 14th century. It obviously draws on alliteration for its appeal. Chaucer wrote in The Reeve’s Tale c. 1387, “Through thick and through thin.”
