Swipe

Origin of: Swipe

Swipe

Derives from sweep, hence to take a swipe is to deliver a sweeping blow with one’s fist or with an oar, a baseball bat or cricket bat and dates from the early 19th century. As American slang for steal or loot, it dates from the mid-19th century and was soon anglicised thereafter. Swipe as in swiping a charge card through a machine dates from the early 1990s.
