Stumped

To be stumped is to be at a loss or nonplussed is originally an American colloquialism that dates from the late 18th early/19th century but is now part of Standard English. It has nothing to do with the cricket term, stumped, which is a wicketkeeper’s dismissal of a batsman who has left his crease, which dates from the mid-18th century c. 1744.
