Strait-laced

According to the OED, strait-laced is descriptive of persons “excessively rigid or scrupulous in matters of conduct; over-precise; prudish” and dates from the mid- 1500s. Often misspelt straight-laced, it derives from ‘strait’ meaning narrow or tight and ‘laced’ from the wearing of bodices or stays that were tightened with laces.
