Straight as a gun barrel / gun-barrel straight

Gunsmiths struggled for centuries to manufacture truly straight gun barrels, and it was only from the mid-1700s that really straight gun barrels were made. Therefore, the simile 'straight as a gun barrel' did not make an appearance in the language until the very early 19th century.
